Proposed changes at The Cross / High Street
Consultation on revised proposals, October 2009
Perth & Kinross Council has sent a letter to most homes in Coupar Angus (posted on 9th October) asking people for their views. The letter also contains the second of the two drawings (the axonometric projection). The Community Council shall consider the revised proposals at its meeting on Monday 11 October, Coupar Angus Town Hall, 7pm. All welcome.
Community Council's Comments on Revised proposals for a ‘Shared Surface’ scheme in the town centre, Monday 12 October
Your Community Council has several concerns about the proposals:
Removal of drop kerbs – ‘Shared Surface’ schemes allow cars and pedestrians to share the same surface. Drop kerbs are removed, and roads are indicated by a change in surface colour. We agree with the Guide Dogs Association, which says that Shared Surface schemes put blind and partially sighted people in danger and pose a risk to other disabled and elderly people, and young children.
Zebra crossing – Although the revised proposals include a zebra crossing, Perth & Kinross Council has stated that it believes there is not enough traffic to warrant lights. The Community Council believes that there is still a significant volume of traffic in George Street and Union Street, and that lights with a ‘Green Man’ are necessary for pedestrian safety.
(The pedestrian crossing beside the old Co-op was decommissioned in 2007)
Parking – No parking will be allowed in the High Street. Instead there will be 4 short-stay parking bays at The Cross and one disabled bay at the chemists. The Community Council believes that the loss of 16 parking spaces from the High Street will undermine trade in local shops, and cause problems for people with walking difficulties.
Change of location of bus stop – We are concerned that the proposed new location for the bus stop will hinder vehicles attempting to enter and exit George Square.
The Consultation period has now ended (on 26 October 2009)
